Wike Declares: 'I Derive Joy Stepping on Big Men's Toes' Amid Ground Rent Enforcement

1.0x

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has openly expressed satisfaction in challenging Nigeria's elite by enforcing ground rent payments in Abuja. During a media chat in Abuja on June 2, 2025, Wike emphasized his commitment to upholding the law, stating, "I derive joy in stepping on the toes of big men."

Wike criticized the elite for disregarding local laws despite adhering to regulations abroad. He remarked, "They go to other countries and see how modern societies are run, but some come back to Nigeria and refuse to follow simple laws."

Highlighting his administration's efforts, Wike noted that previous FCT ministers lacked the courage to enforce ground rent payments among influential individuals. He asserted, "Most of them didn’t have the courage to annoy people, to step on toes, but I take joy when I step on the toes of big men; those who say nothing will happen, but I say something will happen. It makes me happy."

Wike's stance has sparked discussions on governance and accountability, with some praising his boldness while others question the approach's implications for political relationships.
